Who Are We?

At Cheme Designs, we believe in play. It is in this belief that we offer a line of furniture that is inspired by kids, the masters of play. Our goal is to offer original designs that are enticing to kids, appealing to adults, and safe for us and the environment.

All of our furniture is made of Baltic Birch plywood, a furniture-grade plywood, and solid woods.  For the sake of the environment and the safety of our health, we only use finishes that are zero-or low-VOC. We believe that using high-quality products, environmentally-friendly finishes, and responsible manufacturing practices is the only option at Cheme Designs. And we are proud to say, that our entire process (design, build, and ship) is done here, in the USA.

Cheme is not dedicated to a certain style or genre of furniture design. Our designs are all original and draw their roots from a wide variety of influences, mainly kids.

So who are we REALLY? Picture this: 1 man, 1 woman, 2 boys, 1 large dog, 1 rabbit, and a collection of somewhat neglected plants nestled in a house in the mountains of North Carolina. Everyone in the house (maybe with the exception of the plants) loves to play. Now, where to start?

Let’s go back to 2003. In search of a water table that would let the boys not just play with water, but create a dinosaur habitat, we found that all the products on the market were simply water basins with legs or pre-molded water table scenes. Neither would work. So I made a variation of our Sanak-Ji water table that was a basin surrounded with play space. Little did I know that the water table would plant a seed that would rear its head 8 years later in the form of Cheme Designs.

Speaking of, “cheme” is a loose, aka mis-spelled, translation of the Korean word for “fun”. And that is our true goal, to offer products that are fun, either visually or functionally or both.

On a final note, we would like to give props to our photographer, Marc Newton. His keen eye, artistic style, and ability with lighting produced all of the pictures that you see throughout the site. You can find more of his work at www.marcnewtonphotography.com.
